The fight is not over against COVID-19
Australia is not yet out of the woods in the battle against COVID-19, as states and territories ease restrictions and come out of lockdown we are at risk of a second wave of infections (as we have this seen play out in the state of Victoria).
Many businesses and schools are using new techniques that deal with heightened risks of new infections, workplaces are at particularly high risk and it is advised they are to be re-opened slowly. Schools should be enforcing social distancing rules and are acting responsibly, closing if a COVID case is detected.
Should a second wave across the country occur, government authorities will be forced to reinstate lockdown rules again.
Since the initial outbreak occurred in January 2020, the virus has not developed and mutated into other forms, however the behaviours of people has. If everyone believes they can go back to what was ‘normal’ the virus could spread rapidly, as it has done elsewhere.
In Australia, we have been very fortunate to be one of the lessor effected countries from this pandemic, our health system has responded well to the pandemic, medical practices have introduced telehealth services and hospitals have been processing testing kits in a reasonable timeframe.
It is vital we all understand the implications of being too relaxed in a post-covid world, understanding the ‘new normal’ will be the way forward.
